Tennessee Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Danny White on Thursday announced plans to host a “Big Orange Block Party” adjacent to Lindsey Nelson Stadium during this weekend’s NCAA Baseball Super Regional games.

A limited number of standing-room-only tickets will go on sale at the front-entrance ticket window at Lindsey Nelson Stadium as gates open 90 minutes prior to each game of Tennessee’s best-of-three series against LSU. Fans interested in purchasing SRO tickets may begin forming a line no earlier than 2 p.m. Saturday. Fans unable to secure tickets will be able to soak in the gameday atmosphere at the Big Orange Block Party which begins 2.5 hours prior to first pitch.

Football VFL Jayson Swain first proposed the idea, and White and his staff quickly mobilized to develop plans for a family-friendly non-ticketed fan experience.

The Big Orange Block Party is free for all fans and will feature a live big-screen game broadcast, games for children, access to concessions and more.

The area opens Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET and will open 2.5 hours prior to first pitch on Sunday and Monday (if necessary).

To accommodate the Big Orange Block Party, Pat Head Summitt Road will be closed to vehicle traffic between Fraternity Park Drive and Todd Helton Drive (the left-field gate near the porches will remain accessible).

Jimmy’s blog: White will consult Vitello on where to play games

Jimmy’s blog: White will consult Vitello on where to play games

Jimmy Hyams

Danny White might be a new athletic director at Tennessee, but he knows how things work in the Vol Nation – and college athletics in general.

No. 1, he knows he has to figure out a way to keep baseball coach Tony Vitello from being poached by another school or White’s approval rate will dip drastically.

No. 2, he knows who to listen to when it comes to important baseball decisions.

Knoxville appears on the verge of building an 8,000-seat multipurpose facility downtown. Many have speculated that venue is where Tennessee will play SEC games while playing non-SEC games on campus.

During a Zoom call with the media Wednesday, White was asked which he is committed to.

“I’m committed to whatever our baseball coach says gives us the best opportunity to recruit and develop players to the best of their ability,’’ White said.

“We are the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the No. 3 team in the country. That’s pretty good. I’m going to listen to the person responsible for putting us in that position, and that’s Tony Vitello.’’

Brilliant answer.

White said he would not scrap previous renderings of Lindsey Nelson Stadium expansion because he said he could learn from them, but he is not opposed to putting his imprint or that of Vitello or an architect’s into finding the “right formula’’ for the baseball park.

“We know the stadium needs to be bigger,’’ White said.

Asked if boosters have stepped up to help pay for a raise for Vitello and/or his staff, White said “I’ve had great conversations with donors in investing in Lindsey Nelson Stadium.’’

White said he has had conversations for several months with Vitello about his contract and stadium improvements.

Vitello makes $600,000 a year (minus the paycut he took during Covid) and his deal runs through 2024.

A source said LSU was willing to pay Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan double his pay of $1.2 million to $2.4 million, and that LSU has cooled on O’Sullivan.

If LSU pursues Vitello and offers big bucks, how high is Tennessee willing to go?

Regarding other topics:

*White said he isn’t at liberty to say that Neyland Stadium will be at 100% capacity, but would be “surprised’’ if that isn’t the case, since baseball is already at 100%.

*White said it was “smart’’ to involve the NCAA “every step of the way’’ in UT’s internal investigation (led by attorney Mike Glacier) but he said he couldn’t put a timetable on when probe will be complete.

*White said the first two projects UT will undertake facility wise are renovations to Neyland Stadium, including lower West club seats behind the UT bench with premium amenities and a video board for fans on the South side of the stadium with a sports bar, party dec

Focused on the Future, White Launches “My All” Campaign

“What does Tennessee athletics need to look like five and 10 years from now? How do we regain our stature as a dominant college athletics brand in the Southeastern Conference and across the country?”

Those questions were a part of Tennessee Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Danny White’s early remarks during his introductory press conference on Jan. 22.

White—described that afternoon by Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman as “a leader, an innovator and a builder”—on Wednesday announced the launch of the “My All” Campaign, a comprehensive fundraising initiative to ensure Tennessee’s ability to provide a transformational student-athlete experience for current and future Vols and Lady Vols.

The campaign aims to impact each of Tennessee’s 20 varsity athletic programs by providing championship resources to support student-athletes’ academic and competitive pursuits.

Specific facility enhancements are currently targeted for Neyland Stadium and Anderson Training Center, though campaign funds will ultimately allow for strategic investments impacting every athletic program on campus in accordance with the department’s comprehensive facilities master plan, which was concluded in the Fall of 2020. For example, White and his team are currently studying options on the best path forward for Tennessee’s baseball facilities as well as the development of an indoor track & field facility.

“Everyone who loves the University of Tennessee and this athletics program wants Tennessee to be the best,” White said. “That aligns perfectly with my vision—it’s why I’m here. Together, we’re going to set a new bar for relentlessly pursuing that goal. But we need everyone to be all in. We have to be aggressive, and we have to be bold.

“Tennessee Athletics has a unique history of innovation and progressive ‘firsts.’ We need to get back to that—back to setting the standard and leading the way.”

With an ultimate goal of $500 million, the My All Campaign’s public launch is bolstered by close to $200 million already committed. Notably, roughly $70 million in capital commitments targeted for strategic investments in Neyland Stadium and Anderson Training Center were pledged over the previous three years by a contingent of leadership donors (see listing below).

In addition to those major gift commitments, since the completion of Tennessee Athletics’ most recent capital campaign in June of 2017, thousands of additional Tennessee Fund donors have contributed generously, bringing us to where we are today.

“So many of our donors—at every level—have been ‘giving their all’ for years,” Senior Associate AD for Development Brady Hart said. “It was important to us to ensure that their longstanding support and loyalty was folded into this campaign. We can’t thank them enough for their continuous commitment, as they’ve provided a springboard for our fundraising efforts moving forward.”

Looking ahead, another key element of the campaign is the recently launched Shareholders Society—reserved for philanthropic giving that rises above and beyond donations tied to seating and parking. Members of the Shareholders Society provide championship resources for student-athletes across all 20 sports while enjoying unique stewardship opportunities and benefits that expand accordingly as commitment levels increase.

Regardless of one’s capacity for giving, however, anyone with a passion for Tennessee Athletics is invited to participate in the campaign’s push to propel Tennessee Athletics forward.

“The My All Campaign is for everyone, and it will take everyone to reach our greatest success,” Deputy AD for Championship Resources Dr. Mónica Lebrón said. “The campaign welcomes giving at all levels to support both the academic as well as the championship aspirations of the student-athletes representing our 20 sports programs. We want to be the best in everything we do, and the resources generated from the My All Campaign will help us all achieve that goal.”

The launch of the My All Campaign dovetails well with this fall’s Neyland Stadium centennial celebration. Several elements of both initiatives will blend into “First 100” promotions throughout the coming months.

White’s reputation as a builder of successful athletic programs enables him to approach his leadership position at Tennessee with a fresh perspective and an arsenal of valuable experiences to draw from, and he is poised on a forward focus.

“I recognize the frustrations our fanbase has experienced over the past several years,” White said. “But we’re not going to let the past dictate our future. I am committed to restoring confidence, outlining a vision and bringing everyone together to focus on the amazingly bright future that lies ahead. It starts today. Do your part – join My All.”

White also has plans to engage the Tennessee fanbase in unique and creative ways to seek input on multiple gameday fan experience enhancement and amenity options in the months to come.
