HOOVER, Ala. – No. 4 Tennessee dropped its SEC Tournament opener to Alabama, 3-2, in extra innings on Wednesday afternoon at the Hoover Met.
Jake Rucker, Luc Lipcius and Connor Pavolony finished with two hits apiece as the Vols out-hit the Tide, 10-6 for the game. Pavolony and Liam Spence drove in UT’s two runs on the day with RBI singles in the seventh inning with the Vols trailing 2-0.
Senior left hander Will Heflin got the start and gave Tennessee 5.1 solid innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits. Camden Sewell worked 2.2 scoreless to keep the Vols within striking distance before handing the ball off to Sean Hunley, who was the hard-luck loser after allowing one run on just two hits in three innings.
Alabama opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second on an RBI groundout from Jackson Tate. Zane Denton and Owen Diodati led off the inning with a single and a double to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out, but Heflin was able to induce three straight ground outs to end the inning and limit the damage.
The Tide (31-22) tacked on a second run in the top of the sixth despite not recording a hit in the inning. A hit batter and three walks allowed Alabama to take a 2-0 lead.
The Vols were finally able to break through in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a pair of runs to tie the game. After two Alabama errors earlier in the inning, Pavolony drove in UT’s first run with a single to right center before pinch runner Christian Scott scored on an infield single by Spence to tie the game.
It looked as if Tennessee had walked it off in the bottom of the ninth for the win, but Max Ferguson was called for runner’s interference at second base as Alabama was attempting to turn a double play. The call ended the inning and sent the game to extras.
After a scoreless 10th inning, the Crimson Tide got a leadoff double from Sam Praytor, who scored on an RBI single up the middle by Diodati two batters later to give Alabama a 3-2 lead. The Vols were retired in order in the bottom of the 11th to end the game.
Tennessee (42-15) will face off against No. 3 Mississippi State in the first game of the day tomorrow. Winner will remain in the tournament and the loser will be eliminated. First pitch against the Bulldogs is slated for 10:30 a.m. ET.
SEWELL STANDS OUT: Despite the loss, junior right hander Camden Sewell had another solid relief outing in Wednesday’s game. The Cleveland, Tennessee, native did not allow a hit in 2.2 innings pitched, allowed one walk and struck out two. Over his last three appearances, Sewell has given up just three hits and two runs in nine innings of work while striking out nine batters.

Last April, 2020, the world lost John Prine.
At the time, the country music community sent out their messages of love…
Miranda Lambert: “thank you for everything. One and only. #hellointhere #johnprine.”
Keith Urban: “The angel flys home. Rest in blessed peace John Prine. Love and prayers to all of your family and friends. -KU”
Maren Morris: “Angel from Montgomery was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar when I was 12. This one hurts.”
Brothers Osborne: “Rest easy, wordsmith. Forever you will live in your songs. Thank you for your infinite wisdom, subtle humor, and lyrical lessons. You will never be forgotten. @john_prine”
Trisha Yearwood: “My heart is broken. Godspeed kind man. All my love and strength to your family.”
Miranda, Keith, Brothers Osborne, Maren, & Trisha were just some of the artists who were influenced by – and fans of – John Prine.
This October, the celebration of John’s life and artistry will be a weeklong event in Nashville culminating on what would have been his 75th birthday.
You Got Gold will be a series of concerts held all over Music City between October 3rd thru the 10th, including tribute shows at The Ryman Auditorium (October 6 & 7), the CMA Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum (October 8), and the Basement East (October 9) with more shows & events to be announced.
Each of these shows will include a unique surprise line-up of friends performing and celebrating John’s inimitable life and songs.
Proceeds from the week will benefit the newly created 501c3, The Hello In There Foundation. Established by the Prine family to honor John’s memory, the work of the foundation will be inspired and guided by John’s simple song title, “Hello In There,” and aims to identify and collaborate with individuals and communities where people of all ages are marginalized, discriminated against or, for any reason, are otherwise forgotten

Now he’ll be doing a livestream event with the music from the EP – and more – for fans to checkout today, Wednesday May 26th, at 7 PM CST
Along with the video Jordan also shared this post, “Excited to announce that I’ll be doing a livestream of my new EP Buy Dirt from EXIT/IN on Wednesday at 7pm CST. Can’t wait to see y’all there, answer some questions, and play these new songs live. While you’re watching, you can donate to support MVAN – Music Venue Alliance of Nashville & might even have a few surprise guests pop in.”
Surprise guest? We wonder if that would be the same guest who sings on the title track to Jordan’s EP…Luke Bryan.
Jordan shared a bit of how Luke ended up on the project…
When it comes to the music on Buy Dirt, Jordan says “I think these eight songs work really well together, just because they were created in such a close period of time I think I was in the same head space on all of ‘em, and I got to cover one of my favorite John Prine songs to kind of kick this EP off. But, yeah, (I’m) really happy with how all these eight songs kind of blend with what I was going through during the pandemic.”

SEC East Champs
Tennessee won its first SEC Eastern Division title since 1997 and its first outright division championship since 1995 after finishing with a 20-10 conference record. The Vols won five of their six series against eastern division opponents and went 12-6 in those contests.
The Vols’ 20-10 record in league play was their best since finishing 22-8 in 1995. UT’s winning record in conference play was its first since 2005. Tennessee’s 42 regular-season wins are its most since winning 43 in 1995. UT has won 40-plus games in back-to-back full seasons for the first time since 2000 and 2001.
SEC Postseason Honors

We Hit Bombs
The Vols are one of the top power hitting teams in the SEC and the nation this season, blasting 75 home runs, their fifth most ever in a single season and most since hitting 81 in 2010. UT’s 75 homers rank 13th nationally heading into the postseason and its 45 home runs in conference games this season ranked third in the SEC. The Big Orange homered in 16 of its last 17 league games heading into the SEC Tournament.
#RoadVols
Tennessee has been one of the best road teams in the country this season with 16 road wins, which are the most in a single season in program history. With a series win at South Carolina to end the regular season, the Vols posted wins in all of their conference road series for the first time since 1994 and won five SEC road series for the first time ever. Including non-conference play, Tennessee was a perfect 6-0 in road series this season.
Following the SEC Tournament this week, the Vols will likely return home to host their first NCAA Regional since 2005. The NCAA Selection Show will air on Monday, May 31 at noon ET on ESPN2.
