Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes on Monday announced that veteran assistant coach Justin Gainey has joined the Volunteers’ staff. Gainey boasts 15 years of Division I coaching and administrative experience in the ACC, Pac-12, Big East and beyond.

“I coached against Justin when he was the point guard at NC State,” Barnes said. “He was an incredibly tough competitor then, and he has that same tenacity now as a coach. Justin has a passion for on-court player development that fits well with our staff. Our players are going to love working with him to grow their game.

“He’s proven that he can recruit effectively nationwide, and we’re particularly excited about his ability to maintain our strong ties throughout the state of North Carolina.”

Immediately prior to coming to Tennessee, Gainey spent the 2020-21 season as the associate head coach at Marquette. It was his second stint on Steve Wojciechowski’s staff, as he also worked with the Golden Eagles from 2014-17.

In between his stints in Milwaukee, Gainey was an assistant coach at Santa Clara in 2017-18 and Arizona from 2018-20. During his time at Arizona, he assisted in the recruitment and development of 2020 NBA Draft picks Josh Green, Zeke Nnaji and Nico Mannion.

The Wildcats led the Pac 12 in scoring in 2019-20 and owned the league’s third-best scoring defense. Nnaji and Mannion earned first- and second-team All-Pac-12 honors, respectively, that season, while Nnaji also earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year acclaim.

At Santa Clara—where Gainey joined the staff of his head coach in college, Herb Sendek—Gainey worked closely with the Broncos’ perimeter players, including first-team All-West Coast Conference performer K.J. Feagin. Gainey also was instrumental in assembling a 2018 signing class rated among the 10 best mid-major classes in the country.

From 2010-14, Gainey spent four years on Jason Capel’s staff at Appalachian State, immediately preceded by one season at Elon—his first in an on-court coaching role—in 2009-10.

It was at NC State, his alma, mater, that Gainey began his career in coaching. He spent two seasons as an administrative coordinator before head coach Sidney Lowe elevated him to director of basketball operations for the 2008-09 campaign.

A standout college point guard, Gainey played four seasons at NC State from 1996-2000. The Wolfpack’s record steadily improved throughout his career, and the program earned postseason appearances all four years. Gainey was elected team captain as a senior in 1999-2000 and led that squad to the NIT semifinals.

At the conclusion of his playing career at NC State, Gainey ranked second in program history in starts (103), fourth in steals (190), tied for fifth in games played (128) and ninth in assists (344).

He earned ACC All-Tournament Team honors as a freshman in 1997. And in the quarterfinals of his last ACC Tournament, Gainey recorded nine steals during a win over Virginia (March 10, 2000)—the mark still stands as the second-most steals in a game by a Wolfpack player.

In 1998, Greensboro (N.C.) Day School, where Gainey earned NCISAA Player of the Year honors in 1995 and 1996, retired Gainey’s jersey.

Gainey received his degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Marketing, in 2000 and earned a master’s degree in Sport Management in 2006—both from NC State.

He and his wife, Courtney, have three sons, Jordan, Jayson and Jaxson.

Luke Bryan Fell In Love With “Waves” the Moment He Heard It

Luke Bryan just released the Deluxe Edition of his album, Born Here Live Here Die Here — which includes 6 new songs, including his brand new single “Waves.”

Talking about the new track, Luke says, “’Waves’ is a song about kids falling in love during the summer and just all the images and everything about just how beautiful that summer love is and how the emotions just keep coming in waves. ‘Waves’ is kind of a play on words, and I fell in love with the song the second I heard it.”

At the end of last week, Luke did a couple of TV appearances…on opposite ends of the broadcast day. He sat down with Jimmy Kimmel for a conversation, and also performed another song on the Born Here Live Here Die Here (Deluxe Edition) on the late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live.

On Friday morning Luke appeared on Good Morning America and sang “Waves” as it made its television debut.

Luke also released the music video for “Waves” as well…you can check out all of those videos right here.

The original version of Born Here Live Here Die Here is up for Album of the Year at this weekend’s ACM Awards — we’ll have to wait and see which song he performs on the broadcast…catch it this Sunday, April 18th, as the 56th Annual ACM Awards will be live on CBS, 8 PM ET/ 7 PM CT , and available to stream live on Paramount Plus.

Ashley McBryde Changed Her “Standards” to Get an ACM Nomination

Ashley McBryde Changed Her “Standards” to Get an ACM Nomination

Ashley McBryde is a multiple ACM Award nominee going into this weekend’s 56th Annual ACM Awards.

Ashley has nods in the Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year (Never Will), and Song of the Year (“One Night Standards”) categories.

But did you know “One Night Standards” went through a major change before it became a major hit, and earned the ACM Award nomination.

Originally the track was called “Airport Hotel” — Ashley shares the story of how the song, co-written with Shane McAnally and Nicolette Hayford, changed, “We were just trying to be really honest with each other. We had written this song and originally it was called ‘Airport Hotel,’ and then we decided to revisit that song because there was some real gems in there that we felt needed to be presented, but something was missing. And we thought it was the word ‘Airport Hotel.’ And turns out it was because ‘Airport Hotel’ wasn’t the point at all…it was having a one night stand that was the point.”

Ashley adds that after that realization of what they were really trying to write about the 3 writers needed a second to focus…“We had to walk away from it to give it a second to breathe. When we got back in a room, this time Shane was with us and I joked, ‘You know, hotel rooms . . . they only have one night stand for a reason. They’re one night stand-ers.’ Shane and Nic’s eyes lit up, ‘Did you just say one night standards?’”

Ashley McBryde will be performing the version of “One Night Standards” that everyone now knows and loves, this Sunday, April 18th, on the 56th Annual ACM Awards — catch it live on CBS, 8 PM ET/ 7 PM CT , and available to stream live on Paramount Plus.

Ricky Skaggs Proves That It’s Never Too Late to Finish What You Started

Ricky Skaggs Proves That It’s Never Too Late to Finish What You Started

Earlier this year Ricky Skaggs revealed that he had a major medical scare in 2020.

The country & bluegrass music legend shared that last June, he underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery.

Now, it turns out that Ricky is sharing some positive news that also happened in 2020. On June 1st of last year, he finished a journey that started more than 50 years ago.

He received his High School diploma.

Ricky was suppose to originally get the document in 1971 at Lawrence County High School in Louisa, Kentucky, but instead he chose to start his music career. In the beginning of the 1970s, Ricky hit the road with Dr. Ralph Stanley. While that decision served Ricky well, he always had it in his mind that getting his diploma was something his mother wanted for him.

Ricky shares, “She wanted me to graduate before I went full time with Ralph Stanley on the road.”

June 1st, 2020 Ricky was presented by the superintendent of Lawrence County Schools in Kentucky, Dr. Robbie Fletcher, an honorary high school diploma for all of his work in music. The surprise presentation happened as Ricky was participating in a virtual high school graduation ceremony for the Lawrence County High School 2020 graduating class. Ricky says, “It was an amazing surprise and answered prayer of my mom.”

We’re glad Ricky has his diploma…but, we’re also glad things worked out like they did, so we have great musical moments like this…

So, what’s her go-tos, ““Bridesmaids…and I watch that pretty religiously, whenever I’m having a down day. It’s either that one, or Wedding Crashers. Those two are like my all-time favorite movies. Those movies are so funny! They are just so well written and…uh! They just bring me so much joy. Like some of the comedic lines in those movies, I will quote all the time! And if somebody gets the quote…we become friends. Because you just have to know those quotes in those movies.”

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After taking the first two games of the weekend series, No. 4 Tennessee was unable to complete the series sweep over No. 9 Florida, falling 7-6 Sunday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Vols (28-5 // 9-3 SEC) fell behind on two separate occasions early but recovered to regain the lead in both the second and fourth innings.

After a three-run fourth inning powered by RBIs from Max Ferguson and Jake Rucker put Tennessee in the lead, a two-run home run by Connor Pavolony in the fifth inning extended the Vols’ lead to 6-3.

After two straight scoreless innings, Florida (21-11 // 6-6 SEC) cut into Tennessee’s lead with an RBI groundout by Kirby McMullen in the seventh inning. The Gators then took the lead for good in the eighth with a three-run home run from pinch hitter Kris Armstrong.

Freshman Blade Tidwell got the start on the mound for Tennessee and pitched five innings, striking out four batters while surrendering three runs. Tidwell was in line for the win when he left the game.

Florida reliever Christian  Scott was credited with the win after allowing just one Tennessee hit over the game’s final 4.2 innings and striking out six batters. The Vols scored four runs on five hits and five walks against Gators’ starter Hunter Barco.

At the plate for Tennessee, six different Vols had hits, but Ferguson and Jordan Beck recorded UT’s only multi-hit outings of the day with two hits apiece, while Pavolony recorded his first home run of the season.

The Vols are back in action on Tuesday evening with a mid-week trip to Cullowhee, North Carolina, to take on Western Carolina. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.

NOTABLE

KEEPING PACE THROUGH 12: Despite the loss, Tennessee’s 9-3 record through 12 SEC games is still its best since 2004. With the series win over the Gators, the Vols have secured a win in each of their first four SEC series for the first time since 1970.

SPENCE EXTENDS STREAK: Reaching base three times on Sunday, Liam Spence extended his on-base streak to 34 games, which dates back to last season.
