KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Spring practice of the Josh Heupel era is underway as the first-year Tennessee head coach put his Volunteers through a spirited, fast-paced indoor workout at the Anderson Training Center on Thursday afternoon.

Inclement weather pushed the first practice indoors, just hours after four Vols shined at Pro Day in front of dozens of NFL scouts and personnel representing nearly every league squad. Tennessee spent Thursday working on all three phases and implementing its new terminology.

“There’s so much time and energy and work that leads up to those moments where you get an opportunity to truly go out and compete the way you want to as a full team,” Heupel said. “It’s exciting. I’ve got notes full of things that we’ve got to correct as players, coaches and support staff for the next practice, but I love the energy and effort. If you get those things from your players — great energy, great attitudes — then you become a tough football team.”

Heupel, who has developed multiple NFL quarterbacks in his career, is seeking to get the most out of his quarterback roster that includes sophomore Harrison Bailey, graduate transfer Hendon Hooker and redshirt sophomore Brian Maurer this spring.

“We used the code word attack,” Heupel said. “That’s a big part of who we are inside of our building. At the quarterback position in particular, I thought they handled the tempo portion of some of our team sets extremely well and handled the communication piece of it. They played within themselves. They made some mistakes out there, but they did a lot of really positive things too. The thing that we’ve challenged our guys on is ‘Don’t make the same mistake twice. Be coachable. Accept the coaching in a positive way.”

The Vols’ second practice of the spring is scheduled for Saturday morning.

Season tickets for the 100th year of Neyland Stadium and the start of the Heupel era are on sale now at AllVols.com.  Season tickets start as low as $300, with the Vol Pass and payment plan options offered. Fans can experience the Neyland Stadium 3D map to select tickets based on preference. Fans with questions related to seats, views and options can utilize the live “CHAT” feature on AllVols.com.

Opening Statement

“It’s been a great day for our program starting off with the Pro Day. It was a great opportunity, tons of pro personnel in here. An opportunity for our guys who have finished their careers to go out and perform in front of them and put their best foot forward. The players did a great job during the course of the morning representing themselves and our program and enjoyed the opportunity to talk about them, about their careers and who they are with the personnel that was here. We had great representation from almost every team. This afternoon was a really exciting day for us as, the guys that have been working in the first quarter of our offseason strength and conditioning program and then them having an opportunity on day one and practice and compete, make a bunch of mistakes, get a whole lot better during the course of it as well. There was a tremendous amount of energy and effort from those guys. They took coaching really well. They were really positive with each other. A lot of things that we’ve been working on as far as our accountability and the way we communicate with each other, players and coaches alike. I saw a lot of those things in a positive way today during the course of practice. I am excited as we continue go through spring here.”

On if any guys have switched positions …

“Not right now. Our roster has stayed status quo, as far as their homes where they’re starting out at. I think as we go through the early part of spring ball, we are going to find out a lot more about who they are as a player, their skillsets, how they fit into what we are doing, how they’ve grown in the offseason, taken coaching and are implementing the things that we are asking them to do. As we go through that process, you’ll find ways to move guys into a spot where they have a better opportunity to compete and earn an opportunity to play inside of our program.”

On his impressions of the team’s quarterback play …

“I think for everybody inside of our program, part of it is what you do right. We pushed back the start of spring ball a little bit to make sure that they got some of our installs and got a little bit of comfort with our terminology, verbiage and how you need to communicate in all three phases to give yourself an opportunity to learn how to play the way that we need to – play with great effort and technique and play from the snap to the echo of the whistle. That was a big emphasis today. We used the code word ‘attack.’ That’s a big part of who we are inside of our building. I thought our guys did that. Accept the coaching in a positive way. Learn from it. Grow from it. Change from one rep to the next.’ As we called the team up today, that was one of the points of emphasis I made to them. I saw guys being really accepting of coaching and challenging themselves to get better from one rep to the next in a really positive way. I thought there was a ton of positive energy out there between players and coaches.”

On how he prioritizes what he wants to get accomplished during spring camp and his impressions of his defensive staff during Thursday’s practice …

“I think as an overall program, you’re in a race to become as good as you can as fast as you can. That’s the challenge for your players every single day. You’ve got to enter the building with great urgency and put pressure on yourself to soak in as much as possible, go out there, play and execute. At the same time, you’re trying to balance that to where your kids aren’t overwhelmed and they have an opportunity to soak in the information that they need to, go out there and compete. In all three phases, you’re balancing your installs. You’ve got to understand that it’s year one. Your system may be this, but it’s year one, practice one for your guys. So, you spoon-feed them. You give them an opportunity to soak in what you’ve done. That’s partially why we backed up spring ball, to make sure that they had an opportunity to get some of that information beforehand and get some of the playbook digested. You can push it as far and as fast as you possibly can before it gets to spring ball. You come back and now you’re back to a day one install. As your players came back to day one, I think they grabbed onto a whole lot more than we probably thought that they would as we got ready for practice one. I thought we handled that pretty well. Defensively, we’ve got great chemistry as far as our defensive staff. We’ve got a bunch of guys who believe in what we’re doing and who’s leading that room. There’s great confidence in Coach (Tim) Banks from myself and everybody inside of the defensive staff room. Some of those guys have worked together. I think that chemistry is important. There’s a great level of trust between those guys. Our players on the defensive side of the football can feel and sense that as well. They’re playing with great energy. I thought they did a really good job of communicating at all three levels today. Some points of emphasis for us are to eliminate busts and be able to line up, play assignments soundly and play with great technique.”

On the feeling he had during his first practice as Tennessee’s head coach …

“It’s excitement from the time we got a chance to meet with them this morning to the time you see some of your guys that are finishing their careers here have an opportunity to work out at Pro Day, then step on the grass, or the turf on the indoor, and have an opportunity to put everything together and go compete with 120 guys, the coaching staff and all of the support staff. There’s so much time and energy and work that leads up to those moments where you get an opportunity to truly go out and compete the way you want to as a full team. It’s exciting. I’ve got notes full of things that we’ve got to correct as players and coaches and support staff for the next practice, but I love the energy and effort. If you get those things from your players — great energy, great attitudes — then you become a tough football team. It’s a lot of fun to coach that type of group.”

Kenny Chesney Goes Deluxe With His Here and Now Album

Kenny Chesney Goes Deluxe With His Here and Now Album

When Kenny Chesney released his album Here and Now last May, he had no idea that he wouldn’t be singing the tracks off of it in front of fans for a year and half.

While everyone was fully aware of the pandemic and the early stages of quarantine, Kenny, along with everyone else, couldn’t have fathomed that it wouldn’t be until 2022 before he’d be able to hit the road again for touring.

For Kenny, putting out an album is one thing, but it’s not really complete until he steps on stage to shares the new material with fans. Kenny says, “There’s something that happens when we bring the new songs out on the road. To me, that’s when an album is really finished. Once you play the songs, and get the chance to come together in the name of music.”

So, with time at home, and off the road, and with Here and Now not having the concert exposure it would have normally gotten, Kenny’s creative spirit started to turn and the desire to make new music arose, “Being home, writing with friends, recording with people who inspire you,” Kenny shares, “this time has taught me to really be in the moment, to share more music.”

That desire to share new music has resulted in Kenny creating the Here and Now Deluxe album.

Along with the existing 12 tracks, including “Happy Does,” “Knowing You,” and the number-one hit “Here and Now,” Kenny has added 4 new songs, “Wind On,” “Fields of Glory,” “My Anthem,” and “Streets.”

Talking about the new songs, Kenny says, “Some of these songs will spark an immediate hunger for things we all love; some of them I think people will think about for days and days after they hear them.”

With his recent announcement about waiting until next year to head back out to perform for fans, Kenny knew this was the time to release a deluxe edition of Here and Now, “With so much still unsettled, I didn’t want to wait any more to share them.”

While the pre-ordering starts today, Friday March 26th — which also happens to be Kenny’s birthday — Here and Now Deluxe arrives for fans on May 7th.

Of course as fans are excited to hear the new music, they are also loving Kenny new single he just released to country radio, “Knowing You.”

Talking about the powerful track, Kenny says, “This isn’t about death, or losing someone to the other side…It can be a lover who’s left or group of friends who came together, dreamed together, then went off to chase those things. You may never be together again, but that moment – no matter where you are – you can close your eyes and remember everything about the people, the places, the joy comes right back. Those people, those experiences change you. You’re better for them if you’ll see them for what they were and how they made you better. So I’m really happy to know that what I heard when I first heard the demo is how other people are feeling whether they see the video, stream it somewhere or hear it on radio.”

Talking about the video for “Knowing You” Kenny says, “One of the things about this video I love is the way you can feel the settings, and each location – whether in Gloucester, Mass. or the Virgin Islands — was selected because it feels the way these emotions actually feel. As I’ve said, over and over lately, the people who come into your life and then are gone, it’s for any number of reasons. But beyond missing them, you have the opportunity to recognize what they brought to your life and be thankful.”

He also adds, “With all the visual ways people get information, it felt like this was a nice way to give people a taste of what’s to come… to let them see and feel everything this song holds, so that they could tell this song and this video is something more.”

Kenny Chesney’s Here and Now Deluxe album is available for pre-ordering now — and you can also check out his video for “Knowing You” right here..

Shy Carter Takes You Behind the Scenes of “Good Love”

Shy Carter Takes You Behind the Scenes of “Good Love”

Shy Carter‘s new song “Good Love” was written well before the COVID pandemic and quarantine, but it felt like now was a time to release it because of the uplifting nature of the track.

Shy shares, “This song, ‘Good Love,’ is all about somebody really being there for you when you feel like you can’t make it. When you feel you’re dying…you’re on your last breath, they come around and they show you that kind of love, and that kind of compassion and let you know that they won’t let you fall. That they’ll bring you through, and it brings you back to life. It gives you new energy, new hope, new passion, and this song is a testament to those kind of people coming through for you.”

The music video follows along that same line of how in a way…we’re all connected and acts of kindness could be the thing that changes if not the whole world, it could be a major difference in someone’s world.

Taking you behind the scenes of the video shoot Shy says, “It felt so good to see what I have always envisioned for this song to come to life with the help of our directors, Alexa King and Stephen Kinigopoulos and the whole cast and crew!! Hope you love this behind the scenes look!”

NOTABLE

Fast Starts
The Vols have made a habit of getting off to fast starts this season. Through 22 games, the Tennessee has scored in the first or second inning 15 times and has posted a 14-1 record when doing so.

After scoring three times in the first inning on Tuesday vs. EKU, Tennessee has scored in the opening frame in four straight games entering this weekend’s series. The Vols’ eight first-inning runs against Arkansas Pine Bluff on Feb. 24 were the most in a first inning during Tony Vitello‘s tenure as head coach. Tennessee is outscoring its opponents 25-3 in the first inning of games this season.

Tidwell Wows in SEC Debut
True freshman Blade Tidwell made one heck of a statement in his SEC debut last Sunday afternoon. The Loretto, Tennessee, native put forth a dominant performance in Tennessee’s 4-1 victory in Sunday’s rubber game at Georgia. Tidwell gave up just one run on four hits while striking out six batters in a career-high 7.1 innings pitched and was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for his efforts. He is scheduled to start in this Sunday’s series finale.

Opening SEC Play on a High Note
UT opened SEC play with a series win at Georgia last weekend, marking the first time the Vols have won their opening series in conference play since 2014. It was also Tennessee’s first series win in Athens since 2016. Tennessee will look to build off that momentum this weekend against LSU, a program it has not won a series against since 2009.

Spence Continues to Rake
Senior shortstop Liam Spence is coming off another impressive week at the plate,  leading the Vols with seven hits and two doubles in four games. In UT’s series at Georgia, Spence hit a team-high .429 while scoring five times and driving in four runs. The Australia native opened the series with a leadoff home run on Friday and reached base in all four games last week. With a single and two walks in Tuesday’s midweek win over Eastern Kentucky, Spence extended his on-base streak to 25 games.

Vols Continue to Climb in the Polls
Tennessee moved up in every poll after posting a 3-1 record last week. The Vols’ current rankings are as follows: USA Today (#9), NCBWA (#10), D1Baseball.com (#12), Baseball America (#16), Perfect Game (#15), Collegiate Baseball News (#27).

UT’s No. 9 ranking in the USA Today Top 25 is its highest since being ranked No. 5 by Baseball America, No. 7 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and No. 9 by the NCBWA on March 13, 2006.
