Jimmy’s blog: Gray matters, propels UT offense

Jimmy’s blog: Gray matters, propels UT offense

By Jimmy Hyams

After Tennessee games, we throw flags at the Vols.

Green flags are for “keeping doing it.’’

Red flags are for “stop doing it.’’

Tennessee’s 30-17 loss to No. 21 Auburn had some bright spots, but not enough to eke out a victory. But close.

The Vols did go toe-to-toe with the Tigers for the most part.

That kind of performance would have been good enough to beat Arkansas or Kentucky.

Here are our flags.

GREEN FLAGS:

*Eric Gray has emerged as one of the elite running backs in the SEC. Thanks in large part to solid blocking, Gray had 22 carries for 173 yards and caught three passes for 49 yards. In the past two games, he has 59 touches for 372 yards from the line of scrimmage. Gray runs with vision, he’s shifty, speedy and has good balance. His ability to catch out of the backfield makes him an even more dangerous weapon. UT needs to keep feeding the talented sophomore.

*Tennessee ranked last in the SEC in third-down conversions (27%) entering the Auburn game but hit on 9 of 15, with Jarrett Guarantano hitting four of seven passes on third down. Seven conversions were on third-and-4 or less. Converting third downs will make this offense much more efficient.

*Sophomore quarterback Harrison Bailey was 7 of 10 for 86 yards and led a scoring drive against Auburn. He looked poised, confident and in command. It didn’t appear the moment was too big, like it did for Brian Maurer against Arkansas. Is Bailey the QB of future for Tennessee? We might not know unless he gets a start, and maybe that will come against Florida.

RED FLAGS

*For a half and most of a series in the second half, Guarantano was solid, completing 15 of 23 passes, 156 yards. And he managed the run game well. But … and there is a but … the pick six and 101-yard runback was a killer. Those type disaster plays have haunted Guarantano during his UT career – it’s the sixth defensive touchdown he has endured (four picks, two fumble recovery returns).

*Tennessee ranks among the SEC’s worst in third-down defense (48%) and it didn’t get any better against Auburn. The Tigers converted 9 of 15 (same as UT) with eight third-and-5 or less.

*When UT freshman linebacker Tyler Baron entered the Auburn game, he looked around, realized the Vols had too many men on the field, then fell down. It was obvious he flopped to avoid a penalty. Some flop to slow down an offense. Pruitt said he doesn’t coach that but it is the norm at other programs where he has worked. But Baron’s flop was the second time in two weeks a Vol did so. If Baron didn’t flop then what was his injury? Pruitt said he wasn’t aware of a Baron injury and Baron wasn’t on the injury report. Some may think flopping is part of the game.

I don’t.

Morgan Wallen Booked Again as the Musical Guest on “Saturday Night Live” on December 5

Morgan Wallen will be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on Dec. 5.

“Let’s try this again,” said Morgan via Twitter on Nov. 25.

Morgan was originally slated to perform on SNL on Oct. 10, but was dismissed from the show after multiple videos surfaced of him ignoring social distancing protocols while in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Oct. 3 for the University of Alabama vs. Texas A&M football game. Morgan appeared in numerous TikTok videos that showed the 27-year-old partying at a bar, consuming alcohol, kissing women, performing at a house party and more—obviously, without a mask.

Morgan will take the stage for two performances on Dec. 5, as actor Jason Bateman tackles the hosting duties.

In the past five years, a handful of country stars have performed on SNL, including Blake Shelton (January 2015), Zac Brown Band (March 2015), Chris Stapleton (January 2016, January 2018), Maren Morris (December 2016), Margo Price (April 2016), Sturgill Simpson (January 2017, January 2018), Kacey Musgraves (May 2018), Thomas Rhett (March 2019) and Luke Combs (February 2020).

Musically speaking, Eric Church has a lot to be thankful for in 2020, including winning his first CMA Entertainer of the Year Award, scoring a No. 1 single with Luke Combs (“Does to Me”) and earning a Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance (“Stick That in Your Country Song”).

During this season of Thanksgiving—in a year that has been turned upside-down by the ongoing pandemic—Eric said he is grateful that he has been able to spend plenty of quality time with his wife of 12 years and two sons.

“You know, this has been a helluva year, and one thing I’m most thankful for is my family, their health,” says Eric. “We’ve all, I think, grown closer during this. I’m just thankful that I’ve been with my family and we’ve all stayed healthy and I’ve gotten to hang out with them.”

Eric released his new single, “Hell of a View,” on Nov. 9. Penned by Eric, Casey Beathard and Monty Criswell, “Hell of a View” finds Eric crooning about chasing your dreams with the one you love: “This ain’t for everybody / Toes hanging off the ledge / Like we got nothin’ to lose / Ain’t always heaven, baby / This livin’ on the edge / You holdin’ me holdin’ you / It’s a hell of a view.”

Watch Dan + Shay Perform “I Should Probably Go to Bed” at the American Music Awards

The 2020 American Music Awards aired live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on ABC on Nov. 22. The show honored artists in multiple musical genres, including country, pop, alternative, rap and more.

On the country music front, Dan + Shay took home three AMAs, including Favorite Duo/Group – Country, Favorite Song – Country for “10,000 Hours” and the all-genre Collaboration of the Year for “10,000 Hours” with Justin Bieber.

“Wow, this is absolutely incredible,” said Shay Mooney. “Thank you guys so much, this is a huge honor. Thank you to our wives . . . our team, my two little boys. To the Nashville songwriting community, thank you guys so much for inspiring us every single day. There are so many great songs written in Nashville every day and we know that. So the fact that you chose our song means the absolute world to us. To country radio, thank you for playing our music.”

“This has been the toughest year ever [because] we haven’t been able to be together in person . . . But I just wanted to say, music has such an incredible power to unify us.
