Jimmy’s blog: Mays’ attorney: Georgia did not support waiver

Jimmy’s blog: Mays’ attorney: Georgia did not support waiver

By Jimmy Hyams

The NCAA denied the waiver request of immediate eligibility for offensive lineman Cade Mays perhaps because Georgia did not agree with Mays transferring to Tennessee.

“Georgia was not supportive of Cade’s transfer waiver,’’ Greg Isaacs, May’s attorney, told the Sports Animal on Thursday morning.

Schools can not block a player from transferring, but they can state reasons why they think a waiver should be denied.

It is not known how many NCAA waivers are granted when a school supports the players’ transfer.

The NCAA denied Mays’ waiver request last week. Mays and his attorney have 30 days from that date to respond. They could appeal earlier in hopes of expediting a decision from the NCAA.

It’s entirely possible the NCAA will not make a ruling on the appeal until after Tennessee’s season starts Sept. 26.

“The appeal will have a different look,’’ Isaacs said. “We will repackage some things and add some things.

“The focus will be on Mays and the toxic environment he was put in.

“He didn’t transfer to Alabama or Oklahoma, but because of his emotional well being, he decided to come home where he feels safe.’’

Isaacs previously told Knox News “we’re surprised and disappointed it was denied.’’

Mays was initially represented by attorney Tom Mars, who dropped the case to join the NCAA staff.

Mays’ appeal was prepared by UT’s compliance office.

When the appeal was denied, Mays hired Isaacs.

Mays, a five-star recruit from Knoxville who initially committed to Tennessee before signing with Georgia, started 18 games for Georgia over the past two seasons and played all five offensive line positions.

Kevin Mays, Cade’s father and a former All-SEC offensive lineman for Tennessee, filed a lawsuit Dec. 5, 2019, against the University of Georgia System Board of Regents, the Georgia Athletic Association and others after his right little finger was severed by a folding chair during a recruiting visit to Athens, Ga., in December 2017.

Cade Mays, a rising junior, announced Jan. 8 he was transferring to UT in January.

Months ago, Mars said Mays winning the appeal was a “slam dunk.’’ When it was denied, Mars said he was “sadly disappointed’’ and that he’s “starting to think they must use a dartboard to make these decisions.’’

Watch Darius Rucker Perform Brand-New Single, “Beers and Sunshine,” on the Grand Ole Opry

Watch Darius Rucker Perform Brand-New Single, “Beers and Sunshine,” on the Grand Ole Opry

The Grand Ole Opry tallied its 4,937th consecutive Saturday night broadcast on Aug. 15 with a showcase featuring a pair of country music’s biggest stars: Luke Bryan and Darius Rucker.

Darius performed a number of his fan-favorite tunes, as well as his brand-new single, “Beers and Sunshine.”

Penned by Darius, Ross Copperman, J.T. Harding and Josh Osborne, “Beers and Sunshine” is Darius’ first new music since his 2017 album, When Was the Last Time.

The light new tune features Darius crooning the crafty chorus: “Beers and sunshine / Bonfires and summertime / Back porch nights in South Carolina / Ain’t nothing finer than me and my girl / Striking up a little lighter / ‘Cause everybody’s down in a world gone crazy / Don’t know how to fix it but I think maybe / Turn on the good times, turn off the TV / Yeah, the only BS I need is beers and sunshine.”

“It’s certainly been a hard year so far with a lot of heaviness around us constantly,” say Darius. “Like it says in the song, I don’t know how we fix any of these big, real issues that we’re facing, but while we work through this time I think it’s important that we find the silver lining where we can really enjoy the little moments and the simple joys of time spent together with friends and family.”

Tim McGraw Says He Wanted to “Make a Tapestry of Life” With New Album, “Here On Earth”

Tim McGraw Says He Wanted to “Make a Tapestry of Life” With New Album, “Here On Earth”

Tim McGraw will release his 16th studio album, Here On Earth, on Aug. 21.

Buoyed by the May release of the album’s lead single, “I Called Mama,” which is currently No. 11 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, the upcoming project will be Tim’s first solo album since 2015’s Damn Country Music.

Tim’s upcoming 16-song album features a host of top songwriters, including Tom Douglas, Lori McKenna, Shane McAnally, Marcus Hummon, Luke Laird, Ross Copperman, Laura Veltz and more. In addition to the lead single, Tim has shared a handful of songs from the project, including the title track, “Hallelujaville,” “Good Taste in Women” and “7500 OBO.”

“I had a concept,” says Tim. “Now, that’s not to say that this is really a concept album, but I had an idea when I went into this project that I really wanted to sort of make a tapestry of life. Little vignettes along the way that tell a story about certain things that happen in the progression of life and how that can relate to the listener, and how everyone can sort of find a way to walk through this life on this album, find a way to relate to the characters in the stories. And that’s what good art does I think, in all sorts of ways. It allows you to superimpose yourself.”
