KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Republican Party State Primary Board has voted to let the results of the Knox County sheriff’s primary election stand, clearing the way for candidate Brent Gibson to move forward to the general election.
During a June 10 hearing, the board considered a formal challenge filed by candidate Mike Davis, who argued the May 5 primary was “grossly unfair.” Davis raised concerns following the indictments of fellow candidates David Amburn and J.J. Jones in a separate criminal case.
Despite those concerns, the board determined it did not have the authority under party rules to order a new election before the general election.
Instead, members weighed three options: uphold the results, select a different nominee from among the candidates, or vacate the election entirely. The board ultimately voted to let the results stand.
Final unofficial primary totals show Brent Gibson leading with 19,676 votes, or 44.14 percent. David Amburn received 30.16 percent, followed by Mike Davis with 14.20 percent and J.J. Jones with 11.50 percent.
With the decision, Gibson will appear on the ballot in August as the Republican nominee for Knox County Sheriff.
