KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — Federal immigration officials say 117 people were arrested during a weeklong enforcement operation in Sevier County and surrounding areas in East Tennessee.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the operation took place from May 24 through May 30 in partnership with ICE New Orleans and several local law enforcement agencies.
Authorities said some of those arrested were facing or had previous charges such as theft, domestic assault, driving under the influence, and attempted aggravated sexual battery. Officials also noted that some individuals could face additional federal charges, including illegal reentry into the United States.
Sevierville Police Deputy Chief Sam Hinson said local partnerships play an important role in public safety efforts.
“In partnership with ICE and other area law enforcement agencies, the Sevierville Police Department is working to create safer streets, protect families, and ensure Sevierville, Sevier County and East Tennessee remain great places to live, work and enjoy,” Hinson said.
Among those listed by ICE were individuals accused of crimes including DUI, aggravated assault, and sexual offenses. The agency emphasized that anyone violating U.S. immigration laws can be subject to arrest and detention, regardless of criminal history.
The operation comes as some East Tennessee agencies continue working with ICE through the 287(g) program, which allows local law enforcement to assist in federal immigration enforcement efforts or house detained individuals.
Enforcement and Removal Operations New Orleans Acting Field Office Director Brian Acuna said the agency prioritizes individuals considered a danger to public safety.
“By focusing our enforcement efforts on individuals who pose the greatest risk, and with the support of our 287(g) partners, we help ensure Tennessee communities remain safe for residents and tourists,” Acuna said.
This marks another large-scale immigration enforcement action in the region, following previous reports placing Knox County among the highest in the state for undocumented immigrants charged or convicted of crimes in recent years.
