Nashville, TN (WOKI) – As Independence Day celebrations ramp up, AAA – The Auto Club Group is urging Tennesseans to think beyond the fun and understand the risks tied to fireworks.
According to federal safety data, fireworks caused 14,700 injuries and 11 deaths in 2024. The National Fire Protection Association reports fireworks also sparked more than 32,000 fires in 2023, causing an estimated $142 million in property damage.
AAA spokeswoman Megan Cooper says even carefully planned celebrations can still lead to serious consequences.
“Before the celebration begins, be sure to understand your insurance coverage and take steps to limit potential risk,” Cooper said.
AAA recommends homeowners review their insurance policies to confirm whether fire damage, guest injuries, detached structures, and liability claims are covered. Coverage can vary, especially if fireworks are used illegally or improperly.
Safety experts also suggest taking precautions like keeping fireworks away from homes and dry grass, having water nearby, and never allowing children to handle them — including sparklers.
AAA says the safest way to celebrate may be attending a professional fireworks display instead.
