KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT)— Knoxville Police are asking for the public’s help as they investigate a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a bicyclist on North Peters Road.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, officers responded to the crash at about 12:25 a.m. on June 21. Investigators said Brenda Marsh was riding her bicycle eastbound in the left lane of North Peters Road when an unknown sedan struck her from behind.
Police said the impact threw Marsh from the bicycle, causing multiple injuries. The driver did not stop and left the scene, leaving Marsh in the median.
Marsh’s daughter, Angelina Terry, said the incident has been devastating for the family as Marsh begins what is expected to be a lengthy recovery.
Terry said a person at a nearby tap house heard the crash and ran across the street to help. Another bystander, Jamie St. James, stopped after hearing Marsh’s screams, called 9-1-1, and remained with her until emergency crews arrived.
According to St. James, the bicycle was shattered into three pieces by the impact.
Terry said she believes the driver is solely responsible for the crash and urged motorists to remain alert for cyclists on area roads.
Knoxville Police report there have been 88 hit-and-run crashes involving injuries in the city so far this year, including one fatal crash.
Anyone who witnessed the June 21 hit-and-run or has information about the vehicle involved is asked to contact the Knoxville Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers.
