Greeneville, TN (WOKI / WVLT)- Greeneville Police are investigating after a Facebook Marketplace transaction involving collectible Pokémon cards ended in an alleged scam.
According to a police report, the seller arranged to meet a buyer at the Greene County YMCA to sell 31 cards for $200. During the exchange, the buyer handed over what appeared to be two $100 bills.
The seller quickly realized something was wrong.
Police say the bills felt different and were soon identified as counterfeit, with markings stating they were “for motion picture purposes.” When the seller confronted the buyer, the man fled the scene with the cards.
Officers later identified the suspect as Michael Ledford, though the investigation remains ongoing.
Police are now working to gather additional evidence, including reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses that may have captured the interaction.
Authorities are reminding the public to be cautious when meeting strangers for online sales and to carefully inspect cash before completing transactions.
