Casi Joy Celebrates Christmas With “Winter Wonderland” and a Big Bowl of Nostalgia

Casi Joy Celebrates Christmas With “Winter Wonderland” and a Big Bowl of Nostalgia

Casi Joy loves this time of the year, “I am a Christmas fanatic” – and in 2021 this alumni of The Voice is putting her own spin on the holiday classic “Winter Wonderland.”

Casi shares why she picked the song she did to record this holiday season, “‘Winter Wonderland’ has always been one of my favorites!”

She also admits that she didn’t give her team much time when it came to making the track, “I’m very impulsive, and decided just a few weeks ago to record it! This is not the first time I’ve given my poor producer, Zach Hord, absolutely no time to track and mix a full song, but he nails it every time!”

Even in that short time period, Casi made sure that this recording of “Winter Wonderland” had a unique sound, “I wanted to put my own classic twist on ‘Winter Wonderland” with ‘yodely’ flairs and traditional instrumentation, and I’m so happy with how it turned out! Christmas time has always been like a big bowl of nostalgia for me, so it felt right to go back to my traditional roots for this song!”

When it comes to the holidays and that “big bowl of nostalgia” – turns out, that was handed down to Casi, “My family really does it up on Christmas, and the traditions are endless! My favorite one would have to be the game we play to guess which presents are ours! My mom comes up with themed code names for each of us (like football teams, Disney princesses, Star Wars characters) and we have to stand by the pile/code name we think is ours! Whoever guesses their code name correctly wins $20! The problem is, pretty much every year, my mom loses the list with the code names or forgets who’s present she wrapped, so one of the guys always ends up opening decorative towels or something!”

Make your Christmas season a little merrier with Casi Joy’s take on “Winter Wonderland.”

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Kennedy Chandler tied a program record with seven steals as No. 13 Tennessee downed Presbyterian, 86-44, Tuesday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.

In another record-book highlight, sophomore Justin Powell became only the ninth Vol in program history to shoot 100 percent from 3-point range when firing at least five attempts.

Tennessee (5-1) was propelled by 14-of-27 (.519) shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. It was the first time the Vols have shot better than 50 percent while attempting 20 or more 3-pointers since Nov. 12, 2019, when UT shot .545 against Murray State.

The Vols showed especially stingy defense as they have all season long. Chandler became the seventh Vol ever to reach the seven-steal mark and the first since Vincent Yarbrough on Dec. 22, 1998. The freshman standout has 12 steals in his last two games and 15 in his last three games inside Thompson-Boling Arena.

Chandler’s terrific night saw him record 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. He added seven assists and his fifth block of the season.

Powell provided a potent scoring punch off the bench, shooting 5-for-5 from 3-point range to match Chandler with 15 points. Powell became the first Vol to shoot five or more triples in a game without a miss since Jordan Bowden in December of 2017.

Victor Bailey Jr. also scored in double figures Tuesday with 14 points. He shot strictly threes and hit 4-of-8 from deep, while also knocking down a pair of free throws. Santiago Vescovi finished with 11 points and four assists.

After the offensive onslaught in the first half, the defenses clamped down to start the second period. In the first nine minutes, the sides only combined for 17 points. Tennessee forced Presbyterian into seven turnovers, four of which were steals. As the offenses shook off their early struggles, Tennessee found itself on another long scoring run. It ran up a 16-3 margin over 5:12 with six different Vols getting in on the scoring action during that time.

The Vols and Presbyterian traded blows for the first five and a half minutes of the game, but as the defense found its groove, the offense did too. Tennessee rattled off a 15-3 run lasting 4:31, during which Bailey Jr. knocked down a pair 3-pointers and sunk two free throws. The Blue Hose countered with an 11-point burst, but a determined Volunteer side would not be deterred. Tennessee held Presbyterian scoreless over the last five minutes and secured 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field.

Up next, the Vols hit the road for a two-game trip. Tennessee begins its trip by facing Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will be televised on FOX Sports 1. The Big Orange then venture to the Big Apple where they take on Texas Tech in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

MAKING IT RAIN: Tennessee made 14 threes during the win, including nine in the first half. Six different Vols connected on triples Tuesday. After averaging 6.6 made 3-pointers per game for the 2020-21 season, the Vols are averaging 10.2 per game through six games this year.

LOCKING IT DOWN: On the defensive end, Tennessee’s steals have also seen an uptick this season. The Vols racked up 13 steals against Presbyterian and are averaging 10.5 per game this season, up from last season’s 7.3 per game average.

STOP THE SHOOTER: Presbyterian’s Rayshon Harrison, who entered the game tied for 16th in the nation with 21.3 points per game, was limited to just seven points on 3-for-10 shooting Tuesday.

UT’s Jordan Horston Named SEC Player Of The Week

UT’s Jordan Horston Named SEC Player Of The Week

Tennessee guard Jordan Horston has been named the SEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Horston continued her stellar play in 2021-22, earning Most Outstanding Player and All-Tournament honors at the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout in Las Vegas over the weekend. The 6-foot-2 junior averaged 15.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists per contest, as No. 11/10 Tennessee collected wins over Kansas and Oklahoma State at the event and improved to 6-0 on the season.

The Columbus, Ohio, native has paced UT in scoring in all five of her games played this year, assuming a leadership role after starters Rae Burrell and Marta Suárez were sidelined by injuries. She has registered three double-doubles thus far and is two rebounds shy of having one in all five games.

On Saturday vs. Oklahoma State, Horston nearly missed her first career triple-double and UT’s second in less than a week when she led Tennessee to an 80-55 win over Oklahoma State with 17 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and an impressive +35 plus/minus. She was seven of 11 from the field and three of four from the free-throw line, as the Lady Vols posted their first wire-to-wire win and biggest scoring margin of the season. Her defense also helped UT limit OSU to 30.9 shooting from the field, including a dismal 2-of-21 effort beyond the arc.

On Friday, Horston carded season double-double number three, firing in 14 points, pulling down 11 rebounds and adding a pair of assists and a blocked shot. She had the second-best plus/minus on the team at +19.

Horston ranks No. 4 in the NCAA in defensive rebounds per game (9.2) and No. 15 in rebounds per game (11.0). She leads the Lady Vols in scoring with averages of 19.4 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per contest heading into Wednesday night’s home match-up with Tennessee Tech at 6:30 p.m. ET (SECN+).
