CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – Officials with the Claiborne Animal Shelter say no charges have been filed after more than 30 dogs were taken in from a hoarding situation.
According to the shelter, no charges were pursued because the animals were voluntarily surrendered.
Animal control contacted the shelter after an electric company crew discovered the dogs while clearing trees. Officials said some of the dogs appeared to be in good condition, while others were in poor health. One of the animals had also been reported stolen from Middle Tennessee.
The unexpected intake placed significant strain on the shelter, which officials say had little warning and was already dealing with a parvo outbreak among puppies.
“We’ve had an isolated event of parvo, so we had that whole garage area shut down and full of puppies that were on quarantine,” said Misti Roberts, executive director of the Claiborne Animal Shelter. “So we had two open kennels in the whole building.”
In addition to the dogs, the shelter said the situation also involved horses and pigeons.
