UNION COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A unique program in Union County is bringing together rescued animals and people in recovery, offering a path toward healing and stability.
At Russell Ranch, goats, pigs, horses and other animals have all been rescued and now play a role in helping adults overcoming addiction and young people facing challenges.
Owner Shannon Russell says her personal experiences with addiction in her life inspired her to create a program that gives back to others.
Through hands-on interaction with animals, participants build daily routines, learn responsibility and develop meaningful connections in a supportive environment.
Experts say programs like this are especially important in rural communities, where isolation can make recovery more difficult. Regional overdose specialist Kristi Beeler says building relationships and community connections is key to breaking the cycle of addiction.
Participants say the ranch provides a peaceful place to reflect, grow and heal. Some describe it as a source of comfort and hope during difficult times.
Organizers say community members who want to get involved or help others facing addiction can start by connecting with local drug prevention coalitions.
